A burst pipe is one of the most stressful plumbing emergencies a homeowner can face. Water can cause thousands of dollars in damage within minutes, making quick action absolutely critical. Knowing what to do in those first crucial moments can mean the difference between minor inconvenience and major property damage.

Immediate Steps to Take

The first and most important thing you need to do is shut off your main water supply immediately. This will stop additional water from flowing into your home and causing more damage. The main shut-off valve is typically located near where the water line enters your home, often in the basement, crawl space, or near the water meter.

If you can't locate the main valve quickly, look for the valve closest to the burst pipe and shut it off. Every second counts when water is gushing into your home.

Turn Off Electricity

If water is near any electrical outlets, switches, appliances, or your electrical panel, turn off the electricity to that area at the circuit breaker immediately. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination that can result in electrocution or fire.

If you're unsure about electrical safety or if the main electrical panel is in a flooded area, contact your utility company or call 911 for assistance.

Document the Damage

Once the immediate danger is controlled, take photos and videos of all damage for insurance purposes. Document the burst pipe, water damage to floors, walls, furniture, and personal belongings. This documentation will be crucial when filing your insurance claim.

Make a detailed list of damaged items, including their approximate age and value. The more thorough your documentation, the smoother your insurance claim process will be.

Remove Standing Water

Use buckets, mops, towels, and any available containers to remove standing water as quickly as possible. The faster you act, the less damage you'll have to flooring, drywall, and furnishings.

If there's significant flooding, consider renting a wet vacuum or calling a water damage restoration company. They have professional equipment to extract water quickly and begin the drying process.

Call Professional Help

Contact a licensed plumber immediately for emergency repair services. Burst pipes require professional repair to ensure the problem doesn't happen again and to restore your water service safely.

Don't attempt to repair a burst pipe yourself unless you have plumbing experience. Improper repairs can lead to additional problems and may not be covered by insurance.
